The government are testing an emergency alert on the 23rd April 2023. This alert will be sent to people’s mobile devices at 3pm.
The message will say: This is a test of emergency alerts, a new UK government service that will warn you if there is a life-threatening emergency nearby.
This is not a real alert. This alert is a test.
You do not need to do anything.
All mobile phones and tablets will get this alert.
The government does not need to know your phone number to send you this alert. It will go out to every device in the UK.
Your mobile phone or tablet does not have to have Wi-Fi or mobile data to get the text message.
You can choose to turn off emergency alerts if you want to.
To turn off the alert you need to:
• Find emergency alerts in your settings
• Turn off settings saying severe alerts and extreme alerts.
• If this does not work, or you cannot find where your settings are, you can a helpline for the phone you have, or
take your mobile into a phone shop.
If you know anyone who has a secret mobile phone, please tell them about this. If they turn their phone off or on airplane
mode this will also stop any messages coming through.
Health Promotion Event – Diabetes UK would like to raise awareness of the signs and symptoms of type 1 diabetes in children and adults and the importance of spotting symptoms early to prevent diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) which can be life threatening.
Please see attached posters for further information.
Dear Parents and Carers,
As you will no doubt have seen in the news, the NEU teacher’s union has voted to strike on a number of additional days in April and May. The fifth & sixth of these days is Thursday 27th April & Tuesday 2nd May.
All Class Teachers at St John’s will be taking strike action. As a result, all classes will be closed.
For a small group of vulnerable children and those children of critical workers, there will be support given in school, if required. For further information about this, please contact the school as soon as possible.
During this closure all pupils entitled to a Free School Meal are able to access a ‘Packed Lunch’. This will be available to collect from the school kitchen from 11.00 am to 11.30am, with further information to follow.

These digital resources are free for parents to use. There are three different online courses depending upon the circumstances of the family.
Arguing better
An online course to help parents communicate better with each other. Parents will learn where stress comes from and how it can affect them, ways to recognise stress and talk about it, how to support each other through difficult times and what causes arguments and how to stop them.
Getting it right for children
An online course for parents that are separated or considering separation to help manage conflict and minimise the impact on children. Parents will learn how to stay calm and listen as well as talk, why it’s helpful to see things from a different point of view, what to do to stop a discussion from turning into an argument and skills for finding solutions and making compromises.

Me, You and baby too
An online course for new and expectant parents. Parents will learn what their baby picks up before they are born, why stress should be a shared burden, how they can support each other, how to talk to bring up difficult topics and how arguments start and how to stop them.

Shildon’s Baby Bank
We have a very exciting new project here at the Council offices, we want to support families within the community by providing a ‘Baby Bank’. It is only a small facility that will provide small essentials for babies, new-born to the age of 12 months.
We acknowledge that these are difficult and challenging times and hope to provide support to families at moments of challenge and hardship.
This will rely on donations and below is what you can donate:
The items received will help the local community and give to families who are in urgent need of help whilst preventing waste going to landfill. We hope you can help us make this project a success.
Please drop off at the Town Council Offices Monday – Friday between the hours of 10am – 2pm
Working in Partnership with Shildon Alive and Jubilee Fields Community Centre.
Newsletter: Spring Term 2023
Dear Parents
This is a very short newsletter!
I am writing to inform you of the exciting news that, after 22 years as Head Teacher at St. John’s, I will be taking early retirement at the end of the Summer Term 2023. I informed all of the children today in our regular Friday Assembly.
The Governing Body has already started the process of finding my successor and hopefully we will be able to inform you of the outcome of this at the end of February.

At St. John’s Primary School, we are committed to providing pupils with the best educational opportunities available. To enable pupils to benefit from these opportunities it is essential that you ensure their regular attendance.
The impact on children’s education through poor attendance, resulting in lost learning, is huge! Our
children have already had their education disrupted due to the pandemic and every minute in school counts! To prevent anyone falling behind with their learning, we need to continue to work together to make sure that your child is in school and on time every day.
