Assessment is what we do in school to make sure we know what learning your child knows and understands. This is happening in school on a continuous basis. It is also to enable staff to check the progress pupils are making and identify gaps in learning to enable staff to adapt planning to teach to fill any gaps. Assessments can be formative (a formal test style) or summative (evidence of pupil’s learning following a lesson or unit of lessons).
As well as the assessments carried out by school, there are also compulsory Government assessments, for example:
- Reception – Baseline Assessment
- Y1 – Phonics Screening Check (Pupils tested on all phonic sounds)
- Y2 – KS1 SATs (Reading, Writing and Maths)
- Y4 – Times Table Check (Timed assessment of all multiplication facts up to 12×12)
- Y6 – KS2 SATs (Reading, Writing, SPaG and Maths)
Please check the calendar below to ensure that your child is not absent from school during these very important periods.

Reception Baseline Assessment
At the start of the academic year, all pupils in Reception class will take part in statutory Government Baseline Assessments. The Reception Baseline Assessments is not about judging or labelling your child or putting them under any pressure. Its main purpose is to create a starting point to measure the progress schools make with their pupils.

Daily Quiz
This is something we have implemented as a whole school (Y1-Y6) to encourage our children to learn more and remember more. The quizzes will question pupils on current and previous learning to support them in allowing key facts to ‘stick’. Each day pupils take part in a short quiz based around National Curriculum subject areas:
- Monday – Times Tables
- Tuesday – Spelling
- Wednesday – History
- Thursday – Geography
- Friday – Science
