KS2 Pantomime
The whole of KS2 put on an outstanding performance of, ‘Aladdin Trouble’ this week. The show was an amazing success. The children thoroughly enjoyed putting on the spectacle for their parents and friends. It was non-stop laughter from beginning to end, the children really did steal the show!
The Y5 and Y6 pupils took on the speaking parts expertly supported by the chorus which were the children from Y3 and Y4. The pupils really worked hard to learn their parts in only three weeks. The children became more and more confident in their performance as they went along. The staff are extremely proud of each and every one of them – oh yes they are!
A huge thank you to all of the parents and friends that came to see it and support the children. Thank you.
Creative Writing Day with Adam Bushnell
The Year sixes have been working with author, Adam Bushnell on their creative writing. The morning was spent handling artefacts to help with planning a fictional text based on actual World War II events. They gathered evidence and used a variety of language features. The results were outstanding – all of our children are authors!
During the afternoon the children investigated further artefacts and heard first hand recounts from the Holocaust. These were used as a stimulus for writing descriptive accounts of the Jews arriving at the gates of the Auschwitz Death Camp. The children’s writing was both inspirational and moving.
It was a pleasure having Adam Bushnell working in school and we are looking forward to his next visit in June.
Lantern Making
Year 6 Lantern making at Jubilee Fields Community Centre on Friday 10th November.
Year 6 visited the Oriental Museum Durham to learn more about Japan and Japanese culture. We had the most amazing day. We handled Japanese objects, had a Japanese lesson as well as a Samurai demonstration and we took part in a Tea Ceremony! We learned so much about how Japanese culture is so very different to ours. An extremely interesting day!
Residential Visit to London
Y6 have enjoyed a fantastic couple of days on our residential. After an early start on Thursday morning we arrived in Windsor by lunchtime where we enjoyed an afternoon of fun making the most of the sunshine and no queues! We then made our way to our hotel in Elstree where we had just enough time for a quick shower and change before heading out to Pizza Express for dinner. We enjoyed a lovely meal and sparkling conversation. Before heading back to the hotel for a good nights sleep.
We were up bright and early again on the Friday morning and enjoyed an awesome breakfast which set us up for the rest of the day. After breakfast we headed to the Warner Brother studios for the Harry Potter tour. A perfect ending to our English topic – we have all become Harry Potter fans after reading The Chamber of Secrets. We saw how the films were made, the sets were built and how the special effects were created. A magical experience! After a picnic lunch we were back on the coach for our journey home. What an awesome adventure!
Durham Cathedral Leavers’ Service
Year 6 pupils enjoyed a visit to Durham Cathedral for the annual leavers’ service. We enjoyed moving around the various prayer stations as well as taking part in a service lead by the Bishop of Durham. We learned that we are all unique and special and that God is with us every step of the way; especially as we make the next step on our journey to secondary school.
Year 4 & 6 Christmas Music Concert
As a special treat for our parents and relatives, Year 4 and 6 performed a Christmas Music concert on Thursday 15th December. The audience was treated to fantastic recorder playing from Year 4 and high quality brass playing from our Year 6 children. They also entertained by singing a variety of Christmas tunes allowing the audience to join in!
Durham Diocesan Synod Worship
On Saturday 12th November 2016, a number of Year 5 and 6 children led the Durham Diocesan Synod Worship at Durham Johnston Comprehensive School. Clergy and lay-clergy from all over Durham attended the service and we received very positive feedback about the confidence of our children when speaking in front of such a large group of people in an unfamiliar place. The children were excellent ambassadors for our school as part of the Durham Diocese – we were so proud of them all.
